That was the question wish mom Melissa had more than a decade after her son’s life-changing wish experience. Her son Hunter is now 23-years-old but his wish experience is still something he can’t stop talking about.
It all started in 2004, when Make-A-Wish® intersected the family at a pivotal point in their lives. Melissa was a single mom, trying to navigate the difficult waters after doctors diagnosed her young son with a rare genetic disease.
Hunter’s wish to go on a Disney Cruise® with his family was more than just a vacation; it was a chance to get out of their daily routine of doctor’s appointments and instead make incredible memories with the people he loves most. With Hunter’s cousin also being a Make-A-Wish kid in Florida, they got to share the once in a lifetime wish to go on the cruise together.
“Hunter is naturally a happy child, but the excitement was overwhelming because he felt so special. He didn’t have much of a life outside of home, but he got to realize how big the world is through Make-A-Wish,” Hunter’s mom, Melissa, explained.
Wishes like Hunter’s have proven physical and emotional benefits that can help children with critical illnesses cope with and fight their illnesses. “When he was diagnosed, I was a young mom and for one week I didn’t have to worry. It was our best memory as a family, and we will never have a week like that again.”
Back to Melissa’s question- why wouldn’t you want to change a child’s life? For Hunter, his wish changed his life and deeply impacted him forever. He still mentions it every time they pass the location of his wish reveal party. More and more children are needing wishes everyday. You can be the one who changes their lives. It’s your investment in a child like Hunter that makes this impact possible.
