It wasn’t long ago that Andres was living his life as a normal teenage boy. However, it all came to an abrupt halt when he was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and we thank our sponsor Bristol-Myers Squibb for its commitment to providing emotional support for cancer patients, like Andres, whose wish is sponsored by the pharmaceutical company.
The tragic turn of events took an unimaginable toll on both Andres and his family. So one can only imagine the enthusiasm they all felt when the opportunity for a wish came his way-a breath of fresh air after what seemed like years of bad news.
Originally from Colombia, Andres came to in Memphis to begin cancer treatment. While staying at the Target House, Andres’s mother commented on his excitement on the days leading up to his wish, saying that he continually asked a million questions about it with great anticipation.
On the day of his wish, Andres and his mom were picked up in a white limo on its way to Best Buy, where they would be greeted by volunteers and staff with balloons, bubbles, and cheers. Andres wore the biggest smile on his face when he stepped out of the stretch limo, ecstatic for his shopping spree to begin. As he roamed the store, Andres was eager to buy electronics galore, never having had an opportunity quite like this before. With a new iPhone, laptop, gaming headphones and computer games in hand, Andres proudly walked out the door, with that smile that hadn’t disappeared since he arrived.
After Best Buy, the limo took them to Macy’s, where he finalized his shopping spree with a nice watch that put him way over the moon. To top off his perfect wish day, Andres and his mom were then taken to Huey’s, a restaurant they had never been to before for Andres’ favorite- hamburgers.
Before heading back home, Andres and his mom said that although his wish lasted for only a day, there was no doubt that this experience would last a lifetime in their hearts.
