I wish to have a guitar

A note from wish kid Tanner's family

Tanner's first choice of the Alex Lifeson Custom Les Paul Guitar has been the most perfect gift. Tanner has played guitar for several years, and is self-taught.

This gift has been perfect in various ways: prior to receiving his gift, Tanner would not play a guitar very often. Chemo has caused Tanner to suffer from neuropathy, which affects his hand/eye coordination. There are days when his fingers do not move easily due to pain and stiffness, causing Tanner great anger and depression. This gift gives him a goal every day to keep his fingers moving even when they do not want to move.

It has also provided a tool for his other physical therapy needs. The night of Tanner's presentation {when he received his wish}, he was in the hospital with pneumonia in both lungs, colitis and another internal infection. He ran fever of over 102 degrees and had some difficulty with holding the guitar due to its weight and his lack of strength. When Tanner came home, we were told that Tanner still had a significant amount of fluid in his lungs and needed to sit up for much of the day to help get rid of the fluid. This guitar gave him the desire and determination to do exactly what the doctors told him to do. Finally, just the ability to sit alone in his room or with a group of friends and finding the joy of life has been indescribable.

The entire family has had such joy and pride in watching and listening to Tanner play his guitar over the last few months. We are all so proud of him and so thankful for everything that Make-A-Wish has provided for all of us. Tanner, along with two of his brothers, graduated from high school on May 17, 2013. It is our belief that this guitar was the final push needed for Tanner to reach his goal of graduating on time, and will be the inspiration for him to complete his last few weeks of treatment.

Tanner has been accepted to all four of the colleges he applied to last fall and intends to begin taking online courses this fall at the University of Memphis. What the future holds, none of us can predict. But we can tell you for sure that Make-A-Wish has given our entire family the inspiration to hope and dream of a future with four strong healthy boys.

Kindest regards,
Arthur and Michelle Hammontree

Tanner's wish made the difference between a dark and light day. This gift gives him a goal every day to keep his fingers moving, even when they do not want to because of the neuropathy caused by his chemo. ”
