Wish mom Kim shared with us the power of her son’s wish to visit Great Wolf Lodge and have a huge bucket of water dumped on him!
It took Kim five years to get pregnant and just four months into that pregnancy she found out that her child, Lucas, would be diagnosed with Spina Bifida. But to Kim he was perfect.
“He might not be textbook perfect but he is exactly what God made him to be,” she said. Finding out about Lucas’s diagnoses was a sobering moment for Kim but she relied on God, her family and friends, who were with her every step of the way.
Make-A-Wish Mid-South first came to her when Lucas was very young but she wanted to wait until he was older so he would remember his wish experience.
“It was well worth the wait, because he still talks about it almost every day,” Kim said. Lucas was 10 years-old when Make-A-Wish granted his wish to go to Great Wolf Lodge in California to have the giant bucket of water dumped on his head. Kim described the moment Lucas set his eyes on the 10,00 gallons of water, the bucket of water that would eventually fall onto Lucas. All the excitement in the world was shining through his eyes.
Lucas’s favorite part of the trip was visiting Medieval Times, were he was pronounced Sir Luke. Although Kim’s favorite part was his reaction to everything he got to do.
“He has never felt more special in his life, everyone really bent over backwards to make Lucas’s wish come true, every day of the trip was really something special,” she noticed. Kim shared how seeing her son enjoy himself, knowing it was all about him, and that they were a part of it meant the world to them. Throughout the wish journey everything had something special that pertained specifically to Lucas and that has made a lasting impact with him and his family.
The biggest change Kim noticed was how Lucas came back from his trip thinking he could do what he set his mind to. She said that he is always going to have restrictions but this was a chance to make it all about him, no limitations on what he could do.
Wish mom Kim is now currently a volunteer for Make-A-Wish Mid-South. “Being able to be on the receiving end of the wish is what inspired me to give back. Seeing how blessed my child was through this experience, I wanted to be able to give that to someone else’s child,” Kim said.
