I wish to be a cowgirl

Mabry Kate wishes to be a cowgirl

“ Everything was worth it. We loved it. ”

- April, Mabry Kate’s mom

Seven-year-old Mabry Kate is a courageous little girl who has spent much of her life enduring doctor’s appointments and medical procedures. She has always dreamed about riding horses and spending time on a ranch, and her spirit of adventure has inspired her to be a cowgirl when she grows up.

Mabry Kate’s journey has not been an easy one, but even during her nearly three-year battle against leukemia she was able to stay positive. The initial diagnosis came as an overwhelming shock to she and her family. “The toughest part was waiting to see how she would respond to the treatment,” said April, Mabry Kate’s mom.

Fortunately, doctors told her family that Mabry Kate did very well with treatment and she has since been in remission.

For as long as she can remember, Mabry Kate has always loved horses and wears her cowgirl boots any chance she gets, so when Make-A-Wish volunteers visited Mabry Kate to ask her what she wanted her wish to be, she knew immediately. She wanted more than anything to be a cowgirl.

Six-years-old at the time, Mabry Kate’s wish came true in June of 2015 at Dude Ranch, a peaceful getaway tucked between the rolling hills of Arkansas. At the ranch, Mabry Kate and her family enjoyed an authentic western experience, complete with horseback riding, square dancing, and other cowgirl-related activities. Her favorite part of it all was sharing a dance with her dad at the two-stepping jamboree.

Every member of Mabry Kate’s family was there for the wish experience, including each of her four siblings. “It was neat that our whole family could go and spend time together,” said April. “A trip to that magnitude was a tremendous blessing.”

Make-A-Wish was thrilled to be able to provide Mabry Kate and her family with this experience, which created memories that they will cherish forever.

For a young cowgirl like Mabry Kate, this was certainly a wish come true!
