It took only one event nearly 10 years ago to get volunteer Wendy Nieder hooked on Make-A-Wish. When her company, MGM Resorts, volunteered at Season of Wishes, she knew she wanted to stay involved. “I was totally blown away by the Make-A-Wish staff at the event,” said Nieder. “They made us feel so welcome…it was heartfelt and genuine. At that moment, I knew I just had to be a part of the team."
The same company, MGM Resorts, just awarded Neider First Place for the Volunteer of the Year award.
From the very start, Nieder jumped right into the caring community of Make-A-Wish as a Wish Granter. “They never make you feel like you are an inconvenience. They make you feel valued and that is rare these days.”
Even after granting more than 25 wishes, Nieder is more in touch than ever to the importance of wishes for children with critical illness. She believes it’s a huge part of the family’s healing, giving them something to look forward to and most importantly, bringing them back together.
“On the days that I need a little pick me up, I close my eyes and think of my wish kids. I see their smiling faces and remember how much fun I had planning their wish reveal from start to finish. It always makes me happy,” she said.
This year, Nieder gained national recognition as the MGM Resorts International Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations, Wendy!
